How effective do you consider warning labels on products are? The dialogue about the goal of placing such warning labels on consumer products has been happening for some time now. Sociologists mention e.g. that we might become desensitized to caution brands, if we find them on most products we buy.
Still, politicians often claim that more laws should be released that would push businesses to place such warning brands on many more consumer products than the ones that already have such brands. E.g. in Denmark there have been voices raised lately about a necessity for warning labels on soft drinks (Health minister calls for warning labels on soft drinks).
What’s the danger that these brands should warn consumers about? Do you think it could work? I’ve little faith, though, that consumers’ resolution would hold for long in cases like this. To the contrary, just like with warnings on cigarette packs, I believe that consumers would quickly stop viewing them. I really believe that’s what would happen if these caution labels were positioned on carbonated drinks bottles.
This sulfur dioxide will react with hydroxyl to create sulfates. How much additional hydroxyl depletion would of sulfur dioxide cause oxidation? Would this mean that more sulfur dioxide would need to be released ever? Would the loss of sunlight cause a decrease in photolysis and therefore also reduce hydroxyl formation?
If OH reductions were dramatic, what impact would that have on methane, on cloud development, etc? Injecting sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere could result in less precipitation and less evaporation. There’s little drinking water vapor in the Arctic already, which makes it hard for hydroxyl to create naturally. This might make it necessary to apply a genuine amount of geoengineering systems in mixture. Cloud whitening (cloud albedo enhancement) has been proposed by Stephen Salter and John Latham.

The image below gives the feeling of the type of vessels Stephen Salter envisages to spray seawater in to the sky. Additionally, it may be required to create hydroxyl at a large scale artificially. Tri-Air Developments has developed a technology that combines UV light with extremely low degrees of ozone and mixes it with volatile hydrocarbons, to produce hydroxyls.
This technology is utilized in Cirrus devices that emit hydroxyls in rooms of significantly less than 25m3 up two rooms more than 500m3 (images below). Perhaps such technology could be used at a large size in the Arctic to combat the methane menace. The IPCC should be looking into research on this. Another method might be to use UV light for photolysis of hydrogen peroxide.
Such methods are discussed in places like this geoengineering group. Using UV light to break down methane in the Arctic may be attained by model airplanes, outfitted with LiPo batteries and with solar thin film installed both together with and within the wings. Numerous such planes could get around the Arctic by autopilot in summer, a day when there are high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide so when the sun shines 24-hours. Flying figure-8 patterns with the wings under an angle could optimize the capture of sunlight, keeping the planes in the air, when using surplus energy to power UV lights. By the end of summer, the planes could return home for a check-up and possible upgrade of the technology, 12 months to be launched again early summer another.
