The mastermind of the Ultra-Trail Cape Town and Summit Events founder, Nic Bornman, started planning the event over two years ago while living in Hong Kong. Whilst there he got a part in and witnessed massive development in the city’s vibrant ultra-trail-running scene. “Trail joggers are always wanting to cover more distance and to push their endurance levels,” clarifies Bornman. “As such, we think that there is certainly increasing focus on using trail operating as a means of exploring and redefining what is possible for people. The event shall be broken down into three different races, of which both longer events have been graded and completely recognized by the International Trail Running Association.
They are the main 100km Ultra-trail, the 62km Mountain-trail and the somewhat more controllable 17km Urban-trail. The Mountain-trail race at 62km is not quite as challenging as the 100-km race, but it’s still aimed at fit and experienced runners who are comfortable spending a substantial timeframe on the feet. The route has a 2900m gain and covers the same route as the Ultra-trail, excluding the Houtbay/Llandudno loop. The start and surface finish point for any three races will be at Cape Town SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in the town center.
“Cape Town is one of those unique cities where you cannot divorce the natural panorama from the metropolitan environment,” says Bornman. “The route weaves together Cape Town’s ethnic therefore, social and natural heritage. “FIT and FAB” – a Wellness Workshop for all of us “sisters”!
