It isn’t hypothetical–it is not saying something like, “If you’re deciding which candidate to own job, objective requirements such as a college degree will be the most dependable guide”.

It appears to be a categorical statement stating that the subjective does not have any merit, period. Yet, we pay attention with much interest when, oh, a friend describes what made the view from his hotel room so beautiful. It sounds like we are confused as a culture in what we value and what we should consider worthwhile. Some people would say that objectivity itself is a kind of story. And there is Kierkegaard then, who distinguished subjective from objective truth.
